We have Formula 1 being the epitome of motor racing, where plenty of technology that graced the tracks have been passed down to everyday cars like ABS and paddle-shifts for your gears, but here is a brand new category for the world of motorsports – electric vehicle races. The EV Cup is touted to be the world’s first race series that was exclusively conjured for zero-emission electric cars, and will be kicking off in the US with a couple of race events in California at Laguna Seca in November and Auto Club Speedway in December, right before the full series launches in 2012.

According to EV Cup organizers, the slight delay (it was supposed to start in the UK this year) was to make sure that all was ready for the big debut, while safety requirements, car delivery schedules and the need for more testing time also added on to the pile of reasons.

The EV Cup will be a seven-race motorsport series, featuring a couple of principle classes of zero emission electric cars, which are the City EV class and the Sports EV class. The City EV class will be limited to city focused, production , while the Sports EV class targets drivers experienced in open cockpit race competitions. At least these won’t guzzle up fuel like nobody’s business.
