Google intends to serve up a bunch of new tools that will aid Android smartphone owners when they decide to use their handsets to look for the best deals around town, never mind whether they need those special offers or not. The Android-powered Google Shopper app is now in version 1.4, sporting a bunch of new features (as expected with any new software update) and a newer user interface.

Google Shopper 1.4 will come with a bunch of tools that lets you identify various products, perform an online search for further information on the item, as well as check out just where you are able to pick it up at the lowest price, thanks to listings for retailers online as well as those who own brick-and-mortar establishments.

The application is capable of taking your text query or accepting voice input, but for most people out there, the camera-based feature would be arguably more important, not to mention the ability to process barcodes and perform object recognition on product designs so that products can be identified. QR code scanning and the ability to recognize just the kind of products magazine ads are promoting are the latest abilities to be incorporated into Google Shopper, so make sure your smartphone is running on Android 2.1 or better. As for retailers outside the US and the UK, you’re out of luck since Google Shopper at the moment does not support those markets.
