Just how slim is your cell phone or smartphone display? There has been an announcement that pointed towards the development of the thinnest sheet glass in the world, measuring a good 0.1mm that will see action for TFT LCDs and OLEDs. The glass itself is free from alkali, where it will see action in next generation displays, including lighting, touchscreens and high tech applications such as medical devices. Apart from that, it should be able to be used for next generation flexible displays and OLED lighting applications.

Alkali-free glass is mainly made up of silicon dioxide, boron oxide and aluminum oxide, and is widely used as substrates for TFT LCD and OLED. This development might just mean slimmer devices down the road for everyone, but we wonder whether it will be as tough as the Gorilla Glass that has adorned numerous devices today, including the uber popular iPhone 4? After all, having something so thin might also mean it is very fragile, so we would not want to chance putting such a thin sheet of glass in our jeans pocket at the back if it ever makes its way to a handset.
