Everyone knows that Microsoft did try to break the iPod’s dominance with their Zune portable media player, but failed miserably in the attempt. You can’t really fault the hardware at all, since it has proved to be rather solid in nature alongside some rather robust software, but at the end of the day, public opinion remained with Apple’s darling, so that’s that. Still, Microsoft isn’t going to let the Zune die off just like that, and has decided to port Zune-native apps over to Windows Phone 7 instead.

The ball remains in the developers’ court where third-party Zune apps are concerned, as to whether or not they want to port them over to the new Windows Phone 7 platform. As for Microsoft, they will most probably port over a range of apps on their side, but not others that might overlap current Windows Phone functionality.

For owners of the Zune and its iterations, you can sleep easy with the knowledge that Microsoft does have the intention of continuing to release new apps for the platform. No idea on when these apps will be ported over though, so we will have to keep a keen eye out for this.
