The Microsoft Zune is dead, long live the Zune. We remember the good old days when the Zune was being prepared, and most folks were excited about whether this could finally be the iPod killer, but unfortunately, that never really materialized at all. In fact, the Zune can be said to have lost the moment it was released, never mind that the hardware was quite solid by itself. Just as good soldiers don’t die but fade away, there are whispers floating around that Microsoft could have had an iPod nano competitor as well thanks to leaked patent documents.

Of course, this is most probably in the past, and it does not look too likely that it will be resurrected or hit production lines anytime soon. The iPod and its line will continue to thrive, with perhaps the iPhone cannibalizing some of its sales, but to see a device dethrone Apple’s de facto champion for so many years in the portable media player arena? Not too likely.
