Sonos intends to introduce a smaller, self-contained alternative to the ZonePlayer S5, at least that is what we know from an FCC filing which was spotted recently. Chances are quite high that this will be known as the Play:3, where it seems destined to work with a nightstand – and not only that, it will most probably be a whole lot more budget-friendly compared to the S5 that costs a relatively expensive $400. The box does seem to come with a trio of separate drivers, where it will support Ethernet alongside wireless pairing to a ZoneBridge.

There is no official word on when the new Sonos box will ship, as there was a confidentiality request attached to the filing. This means various items such as the manual, device photos, and other data will be kept as a secret for 180 days after authorization, and this would clearly place the new box’s arrival at the end of the year. Since test configuration photos are visible albeit less than clear and in high resolution, chances are the Play:3 will be available sometime before the end of the year, which is opposite to FCC implications.
