Is Symbian as an operating system dead? While its popularity has definitely waned over the years, that does not mean phones shun Symbian entirely as Nokia shows with their N5 that has just gone through the rigors of the FCC to gain an approval. Known by its model number RM-701 in FCC filings, the device recently picked up a collective nod of approval for GSM 850, 1700 and 1900 bands, in addition to WCDMA bands II, IV and V – translating to it appearing on T-Mobile as well as AT&T without a problem, targeting folks living Stateside of course.

Not only that, the Nokia N5 also did pick up approval for its NFC capabilities, not to mention Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity. While you will not find the Nokia N5 run on Symbian Belle (contrary to what we spotted late last month), at least it has the operating system version before that, known as Symbian Anna.

Would you pick up a new Symbian-powered phone from Nokia, or are you one of those who helped Apple gain an advantage of the Finnish phone manufacturer who might be nearer the finish line than it thinks?
