With the popularity of electric vehicles (EV) growing, albeit slowly but surely, it seems that Sony has decided not to be left out of the loop and has jumped aboard the EV bandwagon. No, this does not mean that we will be seeing Sony branded EVs rolling past our houses any time soon, but instead Sony is looking to contribute to the EV industry by creating lithium-ion batteries specifically designed for electric cars and hybrids “from the middle of this decade”.

It seems that Sony is placing its bets that the demand for electric vehicles will experience a dramatic increase over the next couple of years, and are considering building additional factories and plants to support their production if necessary. However, it looks like Sony will not be placing all of their eggs (or batteries) in one basket as they are also considering building batteries for gasoline-electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids as well.

We’re not sure what exactly this will mean for electric vehicles as details are scarce at the moment (extended range, longer life or faster charging times?) but it’s good to see a giant corporation like Sony hopping aboard the green train. Perhaps it’s just corporate social responsibility or perhaps Sony really does see a future boom in the EV market, either way it looks like we will have to wait for a couple of years.
