PlayStation 3 owners who tend to buy secondhand games may not be too pleased with Sony’s new PSN Pass, a network “tollbooth” of sorts for some of Sony’s “premium” online services.

Games on the PlayStation 3 console has never been cheap, probably due to the Blu-ray technology behind it which costs quite a bit to produce and where the costs are then passed down to the buyer, which is why the secondhand game market for PlayStation 3 games have been flourishing.

Gamers who don’t see the need to get their hands on the latest game the minute it comes out will be able to wait, and hopefully be able to pick up games when somebody else is done with it and decides to sell it off. It’s a pretty good thing that they have going on but it looks like Sony is deciding to tighten the belt.

In conjunction with the launch of the exclusive PlayStation 3 game, Resistance 3, the PSN Pass will be used as a special code that comes with the game that would allow players to play the game online through Sony’s PSN. Essentially what this means is that gamers who are hoping to get their hands on Resistance 3 secondhand will not be allowed to play online, unless they buy a fresh access pass. No word from Sony on how much the pass will cost, although we’re guessing that it will be an expense that secondhand game buyers will not be too pleased to pay.
