Date rape drug detector has high success detection rateIt is a rule of thumb for ladies to never leave their drink alone – and never, ever accept drinks from somebody else. You never know whether it might be spiked or not, but for those who prefer to take the risk in living an adventurous life can now receive a little bit of help from Israeli scientists – as they managed to come up with a sensor that will inform you in real-time whether your drink has already been spiked, comparing it against a database of commonly used date-rape drugs.

Fernando Patolsky and Michael Ioffe of Tel Aviv University’s school of chemistry’s efforts have resulted in the sensor that looks like a straw or swizzle stick, where it will get around its job by sucking up a small sample of the drink, mixing it with a testing solution which will cause the stick to change color whenever it detects the presence of drugs. Just in case you want to test your drink in a dark club, there is also a red light which will go off for easy notification purposes.

According to Ioffe, “The drug itself is reacting with this chemical formulation and the previously clear formula becomes dirty and when the light shines it you can detect it. You don’t have to do anything but dip it in your drink.”

It is said that this particular device will be commercially available in a year’s time, as the scientists are on the lookout for investors who are willing to assist them in marketing efforts.
