Facebook making more purchases this year to fend off rivals

Bloomberg has reported that Facebook, the world’s largest social network, has plans to improve the site and keep it ahead of the competition with the acquisition of even more technology/companies this year. With already 13 acquisitions in the bag this year, the company has its eyes on about 7 more purchases for 2011. Facebook already stands out from its main rivals: Twitter and Google+, but it looks like they’re thinking a step ahead by making more purchases before its rivals get a leg up on it.

While it wasn’t mentioned what properties Facebook has its eyes on, Facebook has been rapidly evolving into a website where users can spend all their free time on. From updating their statuses, communicating, uploading photographs, watching movies, listening to music, playing games and more – you can be sure that the new acquisitions will be along those lines. It looks like Facebook’s rivals will have even more catching up to do by the end of this year. What new services/features do you think Facebook will add by the end of this year?

Facebook: Facebook is a Social Networking service launched in 2004. It was founded by Mark Zuckerberg, Eduardo Saverin, Andrew McCollum, Dustin Moskovitz and Chris Hughes. At first, only students from Harvard could join the service, but over time more users were allowed to join. Google: Google is an Internet Search company with profits mainly derived from its AdWords advertising program. Google is also known for other high-profile web-related products such as Chrome, GMail, Google Docs or Google Map, and it has also made a very successful entry into the mobile handset market with its Android mobile operating system. The company was created in 1998 and went public in 2004. Google is one of the most visited site in the world.

Google+: or Google Plus, or G+, is a social network and identity service from Google. The service has started as a closed beta in June of 2011. G+ features "Circles", which is a convenient way to group contacts and "Hangouts", which are virtual places where people users can gather in the form of a webcast. Many consider Hangouts to be an alternative to paid multi-party video conferencing services. G+ continues to grow rapidly and it is estimated that within a year, almost one quarter of the adult U.S population will have a G+ account. (last updated on 12/21/2011)
