Guess there are some rules that remain true no matter what happens, and for gizmos, a price cut is generally followed by a boost in the sales of a particular device. Nintendo subscribes to that theory with their Nintendo 3DS handheld console that saw its price drop to just $169.99 recently, and sales of the console actually boosted the 3DS to the top of the console sales charts – in Japan, anyways.

In just one week, it shifted around 215,000 units. Of course, Nintendo received some help from retailers who introduced the discount a few days earlier despite the price cut coming into effect only from August 11th onwards.

Just in case you were wondering what’s so significant about the 215,000 figure, bear in mind that the handheld actually moved around 30,000 to 40,000 units weekly in the Land of the Rising Sun prior to this, and we do wonder just how much longer the sales figures will be able to maintain at that level with the current price assuming no new hot 3D games are released. After all, value is in the software, and great hardware without good software is definitely a handicapped combo.
