The .XXX domain names on the Internet will roll out this December, so it would be prudent for famous brand names to pick up those domain names before an X-rated rip-off hits the Internet. ICM Registry mentioned that they have received more than 900,000 “expressions of interest” from companies who want to pre-register their trademarks, either that or prevent its sale to other parties who might have a more creative idea when constructing Barbie.xxx.

Non-porn brands such as MTV Networks, Budget Travel and the Red Cross are preregistering so that they need not get all tangled up in future legal battles with cybersquatters who have beat those corporations to it, registering such trademarks in order to make a quick buck during the resale process.

Does this seem as though it is blackmail, as you are forced to fork out even more unnecessary money just to protect your brand? Perhaps, but that’s the reality of the business at the moment, so you got to learn to ride the highs with the lows.
