Ah, going off to the airport is always a special kind of experience, what with all the stress of packing, forgetting to bring something to your destination, and those long check-in queues that tend to happen whenever you are in a hurry. US Airways intends to speed up the check-in process by introducing mobile boarding pass technology from NCR Corporation, so whatever you see up there might soon go the way of the dodo.

Upon check-in, you will be on the receiving end of an email that holds a digitally signed and encrypted 2D bar code which will play nice with current imager-based airport scanners and boarding gate readers. All you need to do is scan your mobile boarding pass at the kiosk if necessary, or simply look smug as you bypass check-in lines and walk confidently ahead to the security checkpoint, using the electronic bar code reader to scan and validate your “ticket”.

Currently available in 14 US airports, there are plans by US Airways to further expand this kind of setup throughout the rest of the year. After all, with more and more people jumping aboard the smartphone revolution, it makes perfect sense to make the most out of the current tools that we own instead of dreaming up new ones.
