Windows 8 installation on HTC Shift made easy Do you happen to own a HTC Shift that hails from the 2007 era, and ponder over what you could use it for in modern day context apart from being a paperweight? Here is an idea – why not install Windows 8 on this puppy?

The good people over at XDA Developers managed to get Microsoft’s latest Developer Preview OS up and running onto the aged UMPC, so those who have a pretty decent working knowledge of technicalities as well as extra time and the right equipment can always give it a shot. After all, you need not worry about voiding any warranties or gimping your handset – no one would want to offload the HTC Shift from you anyways. HTC: High Tech Computer Corporation (HTC) is a Taiwanese manufacturer of smartphones and tablets. The company started as an ODM (Original Design Manufacturer) that was building devices for others, but went on making HTC-branded smartphones based mostly on Microsoft's Windows operating system (OS) for mobile. In 2009, it began to shift its core focus away from Windows mobile devices to Android-based ones. In 2010 the company went back to the Windows Phone eco-system.

Windows 8: Windows 8 was revealed during CES 2011 and formally launched on October 26 2012. This new version of Microsoft operating system (OS) aims at bridging the gap between desktop OS and mobile OS. To ensure API compatibility between Windows 8, Windows 8 RT (for ARM-based processor) and Windows Phone 8, Microsoft has unified the code base of all those operating systems. This should make it very easy for developers develop once and deploy on all platforms with a minimal amount of tweaks. The most visible change is the Metro design language, which is very much suited for mobile applications.
