Lenovo has dropped a gear to rev up its engine and overtake Dell as the world’s second largest PC company, placing it at its highest rank to date in terms of worldwide PC shipments. The statistic comes from data released today by International Data Corporation (IDC), and this journey was a painstaking one after 5 quarters as the fastest-growing PC maker in comparison to the world’s top vendors.

Lenovo arrived where they are to day after achieving record market share of around 13.7% and record quarterly shipment volume of approximately 12.6 million units. Of course, it makes perfect sense for the head honcho of Lenovo to issue a statement, and CEO Yuanqing Yang has this to say, “Lenovo has captured incredible marketplace momentum to surpass two competitors to capture the #2 spot in worldwide PCs over the span of just two quarters. This is the highest rank Lenovo has achieved in worldwide PC sales and, given the current competitive environment, positions the company as a strong challenger to ultimately become the global market leader.”

Will Lenovo be able to usurp HP as the top dog? Only time will tell. [Press Release]
