Remember our story on how Nintendo’s Super Mario 3D Land launch was somehow marred by the rather overzealous (and illogical in this case, methinks) move on PETA’s part to demonize a character who has saved the Mushroom Kingdom countless times, claiming that he has to kill a raccoon in order to wear that cute looking Tanooki suit? Well, Nintendo has stepped forward to respond to PETA’s rather wayward claims.

“Mario often takes the appearance of certain animals and objects in his games. These have included a frog, a penguin, a balloon and even a metallic version of himself. These lighthearted and whimsical transformations give Mario different abilities and make his games fun to play. The different forms Mario takes make no statement beyond the games themselves.”

At least someone has injected some sense into the whole situation, and I think that PETA has better ways to invest their energy and time in more worthwhile targets compared to the all-round good guy Mario.
