Folks living in London as well as its vicinity might be interested to know that the first Wireless Electric Vehicle Charging (WEVC) trial will be happening soon, thanks to Qualcomm as well as the corporation’s co-operation with the UK Government. This pre-commercial trial is tipped to begin from early next year onwards, where the exercise will involve up to 50 electric vehicles (EVs). This particular trial will rely on Qualcomm wireless inductive power transfer technology that will enable high-efficiency power transfer across a large air gap. Using it does not require you to be a rocket scientist – all you need to do is park your vehicle in the usual manner, and let the system automatically align itself to perform the power transfer.

According to Prime Minister David Cameron, “This wireless charging technology is a giant leap forward for the electric car industry and I am delighted that London businesses will be among the first to benefit from the trial. Creative, high-tech advances such as this are extremely important as we work to rebalance our economy, and the decision to trial this at Tech City shows confidence in the UK as an ideal place for innovation and investment.”

It would be interesting to see if such an initiative might boost up sales of electric vehicles in and around London. [Press Release]
