The start of a new year is always a good time to reevaluate things, such as business strategies and what not. Acer seems to have done just that and in an opening ceremony to commemorate the lunar new year, Acer’s chairman JT Wang revealed that the company would no longer be taking the defensive stance for 2012, but will instead be on the attack and will be moving aggressively in the ultrabook, notebook, tablet and smartphone categories.

Given how Acer’s netbook market share was reported to be at 45% worldwide, it was odd that the company did not mention how they would be aggressively pursuing that market. Well as it turns out, Acer’s netbook segment will be merged with their ultrabook segment within the next 18-24 months. We’re not really sure what this implies – could Acer be looking to phase out the netbook category in favor of the growing-in-popularity ultrabook category, or will Acer simply be merging these two segments so that they less micro-managing will be required? Either way we will be looking forward to what Acer has in store for us in the year of the Dragon.
