For most of us, train tickets are train tickets. Some of us use it on a daily basis and we don’t really think much about it, but if you happen to live in Paris, or if you’re planning a trip to Paris next year, you might want to take extra notice at the new Paris Metro payment cards which are expected to help pave the way for the use of NFC enabled phones to help top up the cards, and eventually be used as travel tickets on the Paris area’s buses, trains as well as the Paris Metro. Oh, and on top of that these new Paris Metro payment cards will be designed by none other than Philippe Starck.

The new generation of Passe Navigo cards are expected to take effect come 1st January 2013 and are based on ISO 14443 type B technology. This is apparently a more widely used form of NFC technology and is compatible with NFC-enabled phones and thus will allow users to top up their Passe Navigo cards via their phones. The old system is expected to remain in place so that existing cards won’t have to be replaced, but for the fashionably conscious, wouldn’t you prefer the new Philippe Starck designed Passe Navigo cards instead?
