Twitter has cozied up with Russia after signing their first search deal with Yandex. Never heard of Yandex? Here is a quick primer – Yandex is the market leader in search in Russia, allowing their users to search Twitter for information in real-time. Hard as it is to believe for those living in America, Google is not the biggest search player in markets outside of the US, as it still lags behind Yandex in Russia after failing to capture the imagination and hearts of most Russian web users for one reason or another. I guess it makes plenty of sense for Twitter to take this route then, considering how it is always beneficial to form a synergy with the market leader no matter where you are.

With this partnership in place, Yandex users are able to check out the latest tweets on any subject, thanks to Yandex’s specific ‘Blogs’ search engine. The kinds of Twitter posts that can be searched and will be included in Yandex’s Blog Search results include those in Russian, Ukrainian, Belarusian or Kazakh, apart from top feeds in any other language. Here is what Twitter says about Russia, “We are seeing strong growth in Russia and want to support this by bringing Twitter content to where users already are on the web.”
