Does anyone remember the nightmare that is known as the Virtual Boy from Nintendo? That was a primary example of a video game hardware flop, simply because the technology of the time failed to live up to the vision of the game company from Japan. I am quite sure that with superior graphical firepower these days, not to mention the photo-realistic graphics that are churned out by different game titles, one would not mind wearing a head mounted display when it comes to experiencing a totally different gaming environment. Microsoft recently filed a patent application for a head-mounted display that has a narrow-beam laser integrated into a couple of dilation optics, helping re-create a three-dimensional virtual reality display. No idea on whether this will be able to work in tandem with some sort of Kinect interaction or not.
