It looks like the once reigning champion of screen resolutions on the Web, 1024 × 768, has been ousted, and there is a new bad boy in town known as 1366 x 768 to take over the mantle. This is the discovery from StatCounter, touting that 1366 × 768 screens has just overtaken 1024 × 768 as the most popular screen resolution that are used by the visitors who head over to StatCounter’s global network of sites. Just three years back, 1024 × 768 still made up for nearly 42% of all visitors to approximately 3 million sites which rely on StatCounter. Fast forward to today, and the number has dropped to 18.6%, whereby 1366 × 768 displays now make up around 19.28%, which is an increase of 0.68% compared to May 2009.

For those who think that the figures listed here are a wee bit off, this is because they are global figures. Our friends living across the pond have already seen the higher resolution figure overtake its predecessor sometime late last year. Another resolution that has been declining slowly is 1280 × 800, as this used to be one of the most popular resolution on notebooks.
