A few days ago, we reported that there were some rumors that seemed to suggest that Valve could be working on a console of their own and entering that market with a Steam set top box, with the hardware being outsourced to other manufacturers with Valve merely providing the games. Unfortunately for those of you who got all excited at the possibility, Valve has stepped forward and has since debunked those rumors, with Doug Lombardi, the company’s marketing director, releasing a statement which reads:

“We’re prepping the Steam Big Picture Mode UI and getting ready to ship that, so we’re building boxes to test that on. We’re also doing a bunch of different experiments with biometric feedback and stuff like that, which we’ve talked about a fair amount. All of that is stuff that we’re working on, but it’s a long way from Valve shipping any sort of hardware.”

Interestingly, Valve did not actually outright deny the possibility of their own hardware, but then again it could just be the way Doug Lombardi decided to phrase his words, and perhaps the rest of us might be reading a little bit too much into this.
