Nokia Meltemi bites the dustNokia is not going through a purple patch at the moment, what with word of the Finnish phone manufacturing company preparing itself to slash 10,000 jobs from their payroll by the end of next year. With so many people losing their jobs, you can be sure that Nokia will have to be more focused in the areas that they are working on, and one of the first casualties look set to be the Meltemi platform – which is a Linux-based operating system that targets low-end smartphones. This project originally targeted smartphones which will sell at price points that Android and Windows Phone devices will not drop to, but I guess the effort of having Nokia attempting to court developers for a different operating system might just prove too much of an effort, which makes perfect sense to drop the Meltemi platform now.

Since Nokia had never confirmed the existence of Meltemi on an official basis, not many people are going to mourn its demise, although there is no ruling out the possibility of using elements of Meltemi in other future efforts.
