First of all, our hearts go out to the families of the victims of the shooting at the ‘Dark Knight Rises’ Colorado theater shooting, as we talk about the Internet Defense League which was launched with its ‘cat signal’. The whole idea of the ‘cat signal’ is similar to the ‘Bat signal’ in the Batman comics and movies, and whenever the ‘cat signal’ is launched, the Internet’s lastest crusader, a heroic sounding Internet Defense League, will step forward and be all action and less talk.

Originally announced in May, the Internet Defense League has already garnered the backing of advocacy groups such as the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF), OpenCongress and Fight for the Future, in addition to well known industry players like Mozilla, WordPress and Reddit. According to the group, “The Internet Defense League is a network of people and sites who use their massive combined reach to defend the open internet and make it better. Because it can sound the alarm quickly to millions of users, people are calling it ‘a bat-signal for the internet’.”

What do you think of this initiative? I say that life is going to get a whole lot more interesting this time, although how many site owners will make use of the piece of code in their websites to display a protest message or a petition?
