Nokia logoJust last week, we were talking about how Nokia might reveal Windows Phone 8-powered smartphones at the Nokia World event that is happening next month. That remains a rumor though, but here we are with something that is far more concrete from who else but the big man himself, Nokia Chief Executive Stephen Elop, who actually promised to the masses that the beleaguered Finnish phone company will reveal a new smartphone that runs on the Windows Phone 8 platform – and if that happens in September, then the earlier rumor is definitely right on the money. Certainly, there is a strategic element to an early September rollout of this Windows Phone 8 device from Nokia, as it will be able to hit the market as a pre-emptive strike before Apple makes their move with the rumored new iPhone.

Elop continues to maintain the company’s mantra of working closely with Microsoft and using the Windows Phone platform as its mobile operating system of choice, never mind that Windows Phone powered devices have seen limited success to date. He said, “I don’t think about rewinding the clock and thinking about competing elsewhere. In today’s war … (between) Android, Apple and Windows, we are very clear, we are fighting that with the Windows phone.”
