If you love cooking up a meal in the kitchen for family and friends, chances are you would also want to equip your kitchen with the latest gizmos and gadgets. How about wearing one instead? This is where the Smart Apron comes in handy, where it is capable of alerting your guests that dinner is ready – although we do wonder the practicality of it all, considering how most of us do not stay in really large homes and a simple call to the dinner table would suffice, which one’s nose ought to be able to tell in the first place anyways. Still, the Smart Apron by Smart Design’s Interaction Lab is an interesting addition to any kitchen, where it relies on wireless XBee radios that are connected to Lilypad Arduinos, resulting in an apron which will automatically notify your diners the moment you are done cooking.

A magnetic clasp on the apron will initialize the signal, which is then sent over to a server program, relaying a particular signal to smartphones, tablets, and desktop computers. A solitary AAA battery is all that is needed to power the Smart Apron, so make sure you remove that whenever you need to send the Smart Apron for a wash. No idea on whether the Smart Apron will eventually end up as a commercial product, but it definitely has its fair share of interesting moments.
