There are whispers going around that the next generation Xbox, which many have called it the Xbox 720, will run on a processor which clocks in at just 1.6GHz – which is half the figure on the current generation Xbox 360 that has sold millions and millions worldwide. Well, this bit of information was obtained via a rather well-known gaming figure, Hector Martin (whom you might be more familiar with as “marcan”), and this nugget of information, true or not, was revealed after the rather disappointing 1.2GHz clock speed in the recently released Nintendo Wii U.
Needless to say, to just base a console’s performance on figures of a processor speed alone would be nothing but folly. Clock speed has been an obsession with the last decade, and perhaps a far higher number of dedicated cores could make up for a slower processor, not to mention result in a more power efficient setup that would also have a trickle-down effect on the size of the PSU, size of the heating required, overall size of the console and cost, too.
