Intel has worked with Hillcrest, using the latter’s Freespace motion control technology as part of its newest reference design kit for IPTV set-top boxes in addition to media servers. In fact, the world’s largest microchip manufacturer, Intel, will be offering the set-top box reference design to TV operators and OEMs with some nuances of Freespace motion control technology underneath the hood. Incidentally, if you want a proven track record, bear in mind that Hillcrest’s Freespace motion control technology currently sees action in Smart TVs from LG (“Magic Motion”) and TCL (largest LCD TV maker in China), Roku streaming players (motion sensing remotes), and Warpia streaming media players (WarpiaTV).

Other notable names that have licensed Freespace to see action in their products include Sony Computer Entertainment Inc., Universal Electronics (UEI), SMK Electronics, Atmel, and Logitech, among others. According to Chad Lucien, senior vice president of sales and marketing at Hillcrest Labs, “Computers and smartphones have used motion-based, point-and-click interfaces for years because they are the most efficient way to navigate large volumes of content. Intel has seized onto this idea for TV, and is now driving innovation for serving TV service providers. We’re extremely proud that Intel has selected the Freespace MotionEngine for use in its new set-top box reference kits.”
