In the past two decades much has evolved. We now have technology that wasn’t even thought of all those years ago. There are now more ways to transfer data as compared to the floppy disks of a bygone era. The most widely used method involves no wires at all. German researchers from the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Solid State Physics and the Karlsruhe Institute for Technology have been able to achieve wireless data transfer speeds of up to 40Gbps. That’s a significantly high level, which in layman’s terms means the ability to transfer a full DVD over the air in less than one second.

There’s little doubt that this benchmark too will be considered insignificant a little longer down the road. Though for now it opens up a whole new range of possibilities. The researchers believe that this enhanced wireless technology can prove to be useful in bringing high speed internet connectivity to rural areas that would previously not be able to get such speeds. The technology will also act as a viable replacement in places where it is not economically feasible to lay down fiber cables. There could be various real world usage scenarios once this technology actually starts to be implemented.
