samsung_logoYou know that something is up when you have South Korean conglomerate Samsung set up a research center right smack in the middle of Nokia’s “home base”, so to speak, and I guess when it rains, it pours – at least for the folks over at Nokia for this moment. For the first time ever, Nokia’s market share in its home market in Finland no longer places them at the top – as they had to make way for the seemingly unstoppable juggernaut known as Samsung.

It was reported by research firm IDC that sometime in the first quarter of 2013, Nokia actually moved 196,000 devices compared to Samsung’s 211,000 units that were sold. At time of publishing, Nokia’s market share in its home country actually took a knock to drop to 33.6%, which is down from more than 48% if you were to turn the clock just a year back. It seems that Samsung has come a long way since their early days of device manufacturing, where their handsets back then were so flimsy, they looked as though they were going to crack anytime soon. It seems that Samsung is now encroaching on Nokia’s bread and butter industry, namely feature phones. What do you think Nokia would be up to next to regain their top dog position?
