Personally I love how the Baldur’s Gate franchise looks. There’s something about the hand-drawn backgrounds and the isometric gameplay that’s particularly charming, but we’re sure that there are gamers out there who might have preferred if Baldur’s Gate were made into a 3D game, say along the lines of Skyrim. Well if you do think that the game should have been made that way, game designer Drew Rechner might have something for you in the form of a Neverwinter Nights 2 mod.

Basically over the course of seven years, Rechner took the entire Baldur’s Gate game, including its expansion Tales of the Sword Coast, and turned it into a Neverwinter Nights 2 mod called Baldur’s Gate: Reloaded. Essentially it uses the Neverwinter Nights 2 engine to create pretty much all aspects of the game, including the famous cutscene at the beginning where your character’s adoptive father, Gorion, is slain by Sarevok. Granted the graphics are somewhat dated given that it is Neverwinter Nights 2, but if you’d like to see what the game would be like in 3D, you can download the mod here, although you will need a copy of NWN 2 to play it. In the meantime you can check out the trailer in the video above.
