ps4-xbox-one-pre-orderWhile mobile gaming is definitely not something developers and publishers should snub, especially given how freemium games like Candy Crush are pulling in $633,000 a day from in-app purchases, it does not mean that more traditional forms of gaming, such as on consoles, are dead. In fact one analyst believes that with the introduction of next-gen consoles such as the Sony PlayStation 4 and the Microsoft Xbox One that it could help revitalize the games market.

According to Digi-Capital Founder, Tim Merel, the launch of both consoles in Q4 2013 could turn around the decline in consoles. What Merel is talking about is the market decline that continued back in 2012 which saw a fall of 25% in consoles, and a fall of 44% for software in May of 2013, and Merel believes that with the next-gen consoles from Sony and Microsoft, those numbers could turn around. However Merel admits that the mobile market is very disruptive thanks to technology which helps drive the growth of the market.

Merel also predicts that by 2016, it is possible that mobile/online games could even take over 55% of the revenue share, although at the same time it could also help grow the total video games market size to $83 billion. The argument commonly made these days is that with PCs being so much cheaper and powerful these days, consoles are no longer the dedicated gaming devices that they were back in the day. Some also believe that mobile games will eventually replace the need for consoles, but what do you guys think? Will next-gen consoles like the PS4 and Xbox One help revitalize the market?
