Amazon announced today that developers can now use its new Mobile Associates API to sell physical products from amazon.com within their apps and games. Developers can use this tool to offer physical items as in-app purchases on apps for the Kindle Fire, and those available on Google Play as well as the Amazon Appstore. Products are quite obviously sourced from Amazon, which is the go-to destination for online shopping. Developers can earn up to six percent in advertising fees from qualifying purchases while customers have opportunity buy and receive goods through Amazon 1-click purchase.

It is entirely up to developers if they want to offer a single item as an in-app purchase, they have the option to present an full category of products that customers can peruse and buy from. Developers will also be able to bundle physical items with their digital counterpart, for example customers can purchase a physical board game right after they’ve bought its digital version. Various developers have already integrated the API in their apps. Animoca, which developed Thor: Lord of Storms, will now sell accessories and Thor action figures, it will also offer virtual items like free in-game currency when players purchase physical content from within the game.
