The last we heard, the upcoming iPhone 5S is said to feature a fingerprint scanner which would be placed underneath the home button. The home button is said to have been redesigned and would be convex and could be sapphire-covered, however according to a report from Mark Gurman from 9to5Mac, it does not seem like that might be the case. According to Gurman, who has been pretty spot on in the past, he revealed that the home button on the iPhone 5S will look nearly identical to the iPhone 5. This is in contrast to KGI Securities’ Ming-Chi Kuo who suggested a home button that would be noticeably different.

According to Gurman, “The new Home button’s design will not be noticeably convex. Perhaps the shape has changed slightly, but the tweaked button is nothing distinct enough for the iPhone 5S to be identified as anything but an iPhone 5 by the untrained eye. There’s the possibility, however, that the etching and border of the Home button could become more shiny and look slightly different.” Gurman also stated that the reason why Apple is introducing the fingerprint scanner is to add more security as not many iPhone users use a passcode to activate their devices. In any case take it with a grain of salt for now, but hopefully more will be revealed at Apple’s rumored 10th of September event.
