free-mobile-phone-unlocking-softwareEarlier this year the US Library of Congress made the unlocking of cellphones in the US illegal, meaning that if you wanted to get out of your carrier’s restrictions, you’d be out of luck, unless you decide to take a chance by doing something illegal (unlocking your phone without carrier approval). Naturally this did not sit well with many, including the White House who has announced their support for a petition to make cellphone unlocking legal. Unfortunately the process is still considered illegal, but that has not stopped people from illegally unlocking their phones. In fact, it seems that once it became illegal to do so, cellphone unlocking as seen an increase in popularity.

According to a report from VentureBeat, it seems that a UK-based company called Mobile Unlocked, found that their US sales has spiked by 71% since the ban came into effect. The company provides remote unlocking services for a variety of platforms, such as iOS, Android, and Windows Phone, and according to them, this spike was without the company actively advertising its services, and the US is currently the only territory where they are seeking a soar in sales. We guess when there is a will, there will always be a way! What do you guys think? Any of you guys suddenly find the urge to unlock your phones now that it has become illegal to do so?
