Steve Balmer launching Windows Phone 8We’re sure many are wondering what the next major update to Windows Phone might be. Could we be looking at Windows Phone 9, perhaps? Well maybe not, at least not according to a record spotted in a server log. This sighting was discovered by a Chinese developer who found a device running on Windows Phone OS version 8.10.12166 that has downloaded his app. Given that the latest version of Windows Phone at the moment is 8.0.10328, it is speculated that perhaps this build we are looking at is Windows Phone 8.1.

It is also expected that Windows Phone 8.1 will be the next major update to the Windows Phone operating system although exactly what sort of changes and features that will be part of this update remains to be seen, although some are speculating that a Notification Center-like feature could make its way into the update. No word on when exactly Windows Phone 8.1 will be rolled out either, but given that the Windows Phone GDR2 update has yet to be fully rolled out around the world, there is a good chance that Windows Phone 8.1 will most likely see a 2014 release, which has also been previously suggested by early rumors, possibly during MWC 2014.
