asdf-1While Nintendo might have been the household name back in the day when it came to handheld gaming and console gaming, the company has not exactly been enjoying much success as of late, with Sony’s PlayStation and Microsoft’s Xbox efforts overtaking them in terms of sales as well as the number of big titles. Unlike Sony and Microsoft, Nintendo has also refused to make the switch to the mobile market, believing that console game is still the way to go, but is it? Speaking to the BBC, Atari’s founder Nolan Bushnell seems pretty convinced that iOS and Android are expected to be more relevant than Nintendo’s handheld efforts in the future.

According to Bushnell, “I don’t think handheld game-only devices make sense anymore, not when you have an iPod or an Android microtablet. When it comes to the console market, I think the market is truncating.” Mobile devices these days are definitely getting more powerful with every version, not to mention games like Infinity Blade, Real Racing, and Dead Trigger being prime examples of games with great graphics running smoothly on mobile phone, and with that being said, apart from having different titles, do we really need handheld consoles like the Nintendo 3DS?

Of course this boils down to personal preference and the availability of titles are important to gamers as well, but what do you guys think? Will the day eventually come when handheld consoles like the 3DS and PS Vita no longer be relevant?
