Xiaomi is a Chinese company. Even though it is quite popular in its home country, its smartphones sold out the iPhone, it doesn’t have much reach outside the country’s borders, particularly in the West. That might be about to change though, since Xiaomi poached former Google Android executive Hugo Barra to head its growth in the international market. The company has launched a new “smart TV” which touts impressive specs for a relatively low price tag. Called MiTV, it has a 47 inch 3D LCD display made by Samsung or LG, a quadcore Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 1.7GHz processor, 2GB RAM, 8GB internal storage, Bluetooth 4.0 and Wi-Fi. The software is powered by Android. All this is packaged in a nice sleek design and sold for under $500.

At this point in time, it appears that the product is limited to the Chinese market, where it is being sold for 2,999 Yuan. It remains to be seen if the MiTV, with all of its impressive specs, will make an entry into the global market. Android powered smart TVs are nothing new, though most are often limited to the Chinese market. Still, the Xiaomi MiTV offers one heck of a package. Though these are just specs on paper, which don’t reveal how the TV stacks up against the competition. If you’re interested in owning the MiTV, importing one from China is the only option right now.
