We reported a couple of days ago on the possibility of Target and T-Mobile teaming up to launch a new MVNO. A MVNO or Mobile Virtual Network Operator is a mobile carrier that does not own the wireless infrastructure it needs to function. Rather, it uses another carrier’s network, but the MVNO sets its own prices for the cellular service. Target today formally announced the Brightspot MVNO that it is indeed launching with T-Mobile.

Target says that this new carrier “brings together mobile phone plans you want with the devices you desire.” Customers will have to go to a Target store and select the Brightspot plan as their carrier. There’s a $35 talk and text option that does not include any data, while for $50 per month, customers get unlimited talk, text and web, with up to 1GB of 4G mobile data on T-Mobile’s network. Customers won’t be required to sign an annual contract. Brightspot works on nearly all unlocked compatible phones, so customers will have a lot of choice when it comes to the devices they desire. Target REDCard holders will get a five percent discount, and for every six months of paid Brightspot service, Target will send a $25 gift card to customers. Brightspot MVNO launches October 6th across the U.S.
