The release of Sony’s latest console, PlayStation 4, is just around the corner. The console will start shipping to anxious customers on November 15th, but unfortunately, they’ll not be able to play 3D Blu-rays at launch. Sony has confirmed that the console does not initially support them. Head of Sony Worldwide Studios Shuhei Yoshida revealed this via Twitter, where in a response to a query about 3D Blu-rays, he said “not at launch, sorry.” This statement obviously leaves the door open for support to be added in the future, Sony hasn’t ruled it out entirely, it just won’t be available at launch.

In a statement issued to Eurogamer, a spokesperson for the company says that the PS4 technically supports 3D gameplay at launch on day one, though no launch titles are currently 3D compatible. The spokesperson also said that 3D Blu-ray movies won’t be compatible at launch. This might catch a lot of people by surprise, given the fact that Sony is deeply invested and has advocated for the technology. The company has released 3D films and backed 3D Blu-rays and 3D compatible games. Furthermore, it already supports 3D Blu-ray playback on the PlayStation 3. Despite support not being available at launch, its not like Microsoft’s Xbox One will get a leg up on it. Redmond has already confirmed that the Xbox One doesn’t support 3D Blu-rays at launch.
