bt-terabitWhen it comes to hooking up the entire slew of homes in Britain to a fiber optic network, BT is still far from finished, as it is certainly a massive undertaking no matter which particular angle you look at it from. Still, this should not be taken as an excuse to prevent the company from figuring out new methods in order for it to achieve as much performance as possible along the way from the existing infrastructure. Obtaining a little bit of assistance Alcatel-Lucent, the folks over at BT boffins have managed to create what they deem to be the fastest ever “real-world” internet connection.

Just how fast is fast? Well, we are looking at speeds recorded at 1.4 terabits per second without the need for any kind of special hardware, since only readily-available hardware will see action here. Just in case you are scratching your head to figure out just what you can do with that kind of insane speed, BT claims that one is able to transmit 44 uncompressed HD movies in a single second. Right now, this particular project exists as nothing else but a speed test, BT and Alcatel-Lucent are already whispering to each other about the possibilities of increasing Infinity speeds without having to revamp the existing infrastructure.
