officeonline-500x244Earlier today Microsoft rebranded their cloud storage service, SkyDrive, to OneDrive. The rebranding was reportedly due to an ongoing lawsuit between Microsoft and a UK broadcasting company who felt that the names were too similar. In any case hot on the heels of the rebranding, it seems that Microsoft might not be stopping there. According to ZDNET, Microsoft is expected to rebrand Office Web Apps as well, and will most likely be rebranding them as Office Online instead. These changes will also apply to the individual apps where they will be known as Word Online, Excel Online, PowerPoint Online, and OneNote Online, with Office Online templates expected to be released to users.

No word on when Microsoft will be launching this rebranding, but it seems that Microsoft could finally be doing what they said back in 2007 which was to rebrand and reposition its Office Online website, which at the moment is more of a place for Office subscribers to login as well as a platform where Microsoft can promote the Office 365 suite, so by rebranding Office Web Apps to Office Online, perhaps they can be used in conjunction with the website as well. In any case we’ll keep our eyes peeled for more info.
