Verizon has recently been making a few changes to its plans. It now allows Edge program subscribers to upgrade smartphones after just 30 days, and it has also introduced a new tier in its shared data plans. The carrier has now turned its focus towards international texts, which can be quite expensive if you happen to do that a lot. Usually carriers offer bundles of international texts for a price, Verizon has gone all out and is now offering unlimited international texts for just $5 per month.

Seeing as how 70 percent of Verizon’s subscribers now own smartphones, it unlikely that most of them will be interested in this new plan, provided that the people they talk to in other parts of the world also have smartphones. Generally people use cross platform instant messaging services such as WhatsApp, Viber, iMessage, FaceTime, Skype or BBM, which not only provide free messaging, but also let users make free voice and video calls. Nevertheless, if your aim is to reach someone with a feature phone in a far off land, than the $5 per month plan is the way to go on Verizon. The carrier has also reduced per minute voice rates to a penny for Mexico and Canada, and to five cents for most of Central America and the Caribbean.
