Over the past few months there have been a lot of rumors about the devices that Amazon is believed to be working on. Some say that the company is building a game console, others believe that perhaps its working on a set top box. For over a year now it has been rumored that Amazon is looking to get into the smartphone game. Its expected to build one that would run a highly forked version of Android, like its Kindle tablets. While nothing concrete has materialized, recent rumors suggest that the Amazon smartphone release is slated for this year.

Citing industry sources, notorious Taiwanese trade publication Digitimes claims that the supply chain is getting ready to fill component orders for the Amazon smartphone. Mass production is said to begin within the year as orders have reportedly been sent starting March. The report also claims that Amazon has went back to the drawing board multiple times to ensure that its smartphone doesn’t fall behind the latest market trends.

Rumored specifications include 5 inch HD display, Snapdragon 800 quadcore processor from Qualcomm, 13 megapixel rear camera and presumably 3D gesture tracking as well. Amazon has chosen not to comment on speculation about its first ever smartphone, so its unlikely that the company is going to drop any hints about it.
