lenovo-ThinkPad-T440s_10Battery fires can be nasty business as we have seen in the past, which is why Lenovo has recently recalled around 37,000 ThinkPad batteries over a potential fire hazard. Thankfully these affected models aren’t any of Lenovo’s newer models, but rather those sold between October 2010 to April 2011.

According to a statement released on the US Consumer Product Safety Commission’s website, “This recall involves Lenovo battery packs sold with the following ThinkPad notebook computers: the Edge 11, 13 and 14 series, the T410, T420, T510 and W510 series, and the X100e, X120e, X200, X201 and X201s series. The battery packs were also sold separately.”

The statement also adds, “Recalled battery packs have one of the following part numbers starting with the fourth digit in a long series of numbers and letters printed on a white sticker below the bar code on the battery pack: 42T4695, 42T4711, 42T4798, 42T4804, 42T4812, 42T4822, 42T4828, 42T4834, 42T4840 and 42T4890.”

At the moment the recall is limited to the US and Canada with 34,500 batteries being recalled in the US, and 2,900 in Canada. There have also been reports that 115,000 batteries have been recalled in China as well. It is unclear if other parts of the world are affected as Lenovo has yet to comment on that.

If you discover that your notebook’s battery has been affected by it, the CPSC suggests that you immediately remove the battery and contact the vendor for a replacement. So are any of our readers’ batteries one of the affected ones?
