minecraft-35millionA few days ago, Minecraft’s creator, Markus “Notch” Persson announced that the game for the Oculus Rift virtual reality headset would be cancelled following Facebook’s acquisition of Oculus VR. The reason? Apparently Facebook creeps him out.

However was this a smart decision by Notch? After all some expected that with Facebook backing the device, Minecraft for the Oculus Rift could have gone on to make a lot of money for Notch and Mojang, but apparently this wasn’t his intention in the first place.

Making a series of posts on Twitter, Notch revealed that Minecraft for the Oculus Rift was designed to be free to begin with. In fact the reason for this is so that he and Mojang will be able to help promote the virtual reality technology, or at least that’s what he claims because according to Oculus Rift’s inventor, Palmer Luckey, Notch did not really do much to begin with.

Posting on Facebook, Luckey wrote, “He had the Rift for a year and had not even tried the Minecraft mod (which is really good), much less done any exploration work. I think Notch is a super cool guy, but it is really easy to ‘cancel’ a project that was never started as an out.”

However Notch defended this to Kotaku, stating that he had built several prototype games for the Oculus Rift and that the team behind the mobile version of the game was the one that was responsible for the development of the Oculus Rift version. In any case it seems that for now, Minecraft for the Oculus Rift remains cancelled. Will Notch change his mind? Will Sony attempt to reach out to him instead? We guess we’ll just have to wait and see.
