juxtaposeThe Malaysia Prime Minister Najib Razak had announced that Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 can be assumed beyond all reasonable doubt that it crash landed in the Indian Ocean, with no survivors from the 239 people who were on board the ill fated flight. Having said that, The New York Times’ online readers were surprised to see an unfortunate juxtaposition when an Apple iPad Air ad was placed right beside an article concerning MH370, with the underwater scuba diver in the ad located right above the headline, “Malaysia Says Jet Went Down in Ocean.”

This happens to be a random case of bad luck I suppose, as Apple in its role as an advertiser would not have had any kind of knowledge on the kind of headlines that will pop up on its homepage. According to a spokesperson for the Times, “It was an unfortunate coincidence that this particular creative ran adjacent to that particular article. The ad was taken down by mutual agreement and we are still determining a resolution regarding placing the ad again.”

So far, MH370’s disappearance has seen the lower levels of scum make several appearances, ranging from selling a domain name for a whopping $5,000 to a Craigslist ad that claims the missing Boeing 777-200ER is safe and can be purchased for $70.
