Compared to companies like Sony and Microsoft, Nintendo probably isn’t doing so hot at the moment. Wii U sales have been called disappointing with Nintendo slashing their estimates by a huge margin at the same time.
However Nintendo is known for the first-party titles and with new titles like Mario Kart 8 and Super Smash Bros. on their way, there is a small chance that these titles could reinvigorate sales of the Wii U and demand for Nintendo products. In fact game designer Peter Molyneux thinks that Nintendo is a company that shouldn’t be underestimated, according to a recent interview with IGN.
Speaking to the folks at IGN, Molyneux was quoted as saying, “Never underestimate Nintendo. They’re probably one hardware release away from something that utterly convinces us that they know exactly what the future of games should be.”
However Molyneux also added that he’s not necessarily a fan of the Wii U’s design and called it clunky. He also stated that Nintendo might have “lost their way” when it came to the Wii U, suggesting that Nintendo did a much better job with the original Nintendo Wii that came before the Wii U.
“The problem with Nintendo is they did a fantastic job of finding these millions of new players with the Wii, and the Wii U kind of does that but also tries to bring in the existing gamers as well, so they may have lost their way a bit. But they’re super-smart people.”
Analyst and investors have urged Nintendo to reconsider their stance regarding mobile games, a stance which Nintendo has refused to budge on. The company has stated many times in the past that they will not be releasing their games for mobile, although did state that they will develop apps, but not necessarily games.
Perhaps Nintendo really shouldn’t be underestimated. It seems that despite everything, the company still has its fair share of loyal gamers and believers so we guess only time will tell if Nintendo’s current strategy will pay off.
